About us

Circle of Studies on the Battle of the Bulge

Origins and Early Mission

Our association CEBA, which stands for "Circle of Studies on the Battle of the Bulge", respectively from the French translation "Cercle d'Études sur la Bataille des Ardennes", was founded in 1972 as a non-profit association and has nearly 200 members today.

If the initial idea back then was to create a museum of the Battle of the Bulge, to erect a monument in honor of the US soldiers who fought in the battle and to assist US veterans who visited Luxembourg after the war, the scope of activities quickly expanded into gathering documents, maps, letters and publications too. The ongoing contact with veterans and civilians quickly led to a vast amount of information we received through personal accounts, letters and photographs coming from the United States, Germany and Luxembourg.

Over 50 Years of Historical Preservation and Public Engagement

In over 50 years, CEBA has issued its own magazine "The Bulge" covering stories, portraits and facts about the battle. We inaugurated more than 50 monuments and memorials ever since and organized and coordinated hundreds of events, conferences, exhibitions and meetings, to name but a few of our activities. Through our growing network of friends, historians, army personnel, archives, writers and others, we have become the contact of choice in Luxembourg when it comes to the history of the Battle of the Bulge.

Publications, Community Contributions and Ongoing Mission

We also published a number of books and still do, and even produced a movie about the fighting in Clervaux. But it doesn't stop here. Our mission continues and we are grateful for all the support we have received and do receive from municipalities and official institutions to do our work. But the most important source for us were and still are the people that contact us to share their story, that of their family, friends and brothers in arms. Hence we are grateful for anyone who contacts us to share a story, a memory, a document, a picture, a letter or an item, adding another piece to the great puzzle that history — and in the end also the story of the Battle of the Bulge — is.

Research, Documentation and the Future of CEBA

Gathering and sharing facts and information has always been one of CEBA's main goals. With the recently inaugurated CDEBA, our research and documentation center on the Battle of the Bulge in Lieler, we took another important step in that direction and into the future of our association: to explore and preserve the historical heritage that the fiercest battle in the West during World War II left behind for us and generations to come.
